Sinclair Broadcast Group is proving once again how much it is part of the Texas community by announcing a new partnership with the Salvation Army to help Texans who were affected by the highly unusual ice storm that swept through Texas in February. The media conglomerate owns over 191 television stations in 89 markets spread throughout the southwest region and is known for its charity work and willingness to use its platform to help out fellow citizens.
The Unprecedented Winter Storm
Unofficially called Winter Storm Uri, there was nothing welcoming about its arrival in the Texas region. The Texas power grid was not equipped to handle the sudden need for heat and lighting that below-freezing temperatures and wind storms brought with it resulting in the 2021 Texas power crisis. The entire state was faced with rolling blackouts for weeks and it became the largest blackout to occur within the USA since 2003. The cold wave led to several dozen deaths and makeshift attempts at heating homes led to fires and more deaths. As one of the most prolific media providers in Texas, KDM Fox 4 News and their parent company Sinclair Broadcast Group knew they had to step in to help.
Long-Lasting Effects of the Ice Storm
While the ice storm may now be over in Texas, its effects are continuing to linger. Families who lost family members must now figure out new ways to approach the future and the state itself along with thousands of households across the state are facing high unprecedented energy bills without any relief in sight. The low temperatures and ice storms that struck Texas were unheard of, leaving most people with energy bills that they have no hope of paying off any time soon.
Sinclair Broadcast Group Announces Partnership
Fox 4 News along with parent group Sinclair Broadcast Group recognized the great need in Texas as over 5.4 million citizens were without power and energy at one point. Therefore, they are using their media platform to encourage viewers to donate to The Salvation Army which is providing warming areas for families affected by the freezing temperatures and offering food and shelter for the homeless who were also severely impacted by the unseasonably cold winter storm.
Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Local History of Charity and Support in Texas
This is not the first time that Sinclair Broadcast Group has stepped up to help its local viewing audiences in their time of need. The company has news outlets in 89 markets spread throughout the midwest and the southwest and is always one of the first organizations to step up when one of its audiences is in need. In the past, they have partnered with The Salvation Army to help after the derecho winds in Iowa, to address the needs of local viewers following the COVID-19 pandemic, and to help boost the profile of Nashville’s “Save Christmas” campaign.
